Clemson among post-spring betting favorites to win national title

The Tigers fell short of making the national championship game last season. But Clemson expects to be back in the College Football Playoff hunt this fall, working to get back to the title game after a one-year hiatus.

The folks in Las Vegas also believe the Tigers will be in the CFP conversation this fall. The post-spring betting odds are out, and Clemson is among the favorites to win the national championship, according to the DraftKings Sportsbook. Alabama has the best odds. The Crimson Tide (+250) are followed by Clemson (+300), Ohio State (+400), Georgia (+600), Oklahoma (+800), LSU (+2500) and Texas A&M (+2500).

Alabama defeated Ohio State in the national title game this past season. The Crimson Tide, Buckeyes and Tigers will all be breaking in new quarterbacks and replacing talented players, but that isn’t lowering expectations. All three schools are consistently among the top teams in college football year in and year out, always competing for the same prize — a national championship.

Clemson came up short of making the title tilt last season, but the Tigers have a good chance to make their seventh straight College Football Playoff and do some damage once they get there.

Caden Grice named ACC Player of the Week

True freshman Caden Grice was named ACC Player of the Week on Monday, marking the second time this season he’s won the award.

The first baseman went 9-for-13 with four home runs, a double, 12 RBIs and a .750 on-base percentage last week. Grice reached base in 12 of his 16 at-bats in Clemson’s three-game sweep of No. 4 Louisville. He tied the school record with three homers and eight total RBIs on Friday, the most by any Tiger since 2006.

Grice was also named one of 11 national players of the week by Collegiate Baseball. This marks the third time he has been named a national player of the week by an outlet in 2021.

Grice is batting .358 with 12 home runs and 43 RBIs on the season, along with a .686 slugging percentage. The Tigers are now on a six-game win streak and are 21-18 overall and 15-12 in ACC play. Clemson hosts USC Upstate on Wednesday night.

Tigers working on plans to complete Death Valley upgrades

ClemsonSports.com senior writer Matt Connolly met with Tigers athletics director Dan Radakovich for a one-on-one interview on Monday. The two discussed a handful of topics, including the renovations planned for Memorial Stadium.

Here’s what Connolly learned:

Radakovich and other members of the athletics department will meet over the next several weeks to try to come up with a plan for renovations for Death Valley.

The original plan called for the project to be completed before the start of the 2021 season, but that obviously won’t take place.
